What is the Meaning of Life?
Archisman Ghosh (11 Years)
I trod through the half burned, blood-covered rainforest. Blood soaked into my torn night slippers. Boom! Grenades sounded behind me. Screams pierced in the cold midnight air. I shivered; the thoughts of my family getting shot filled my brain. I was too overwhelmed. I ran as fast as I could (which wasn’t the fastest) in my night slippers, into the unknown.
I had reached the middle of nowhere. Trees surrounded me. Prickly hedges guarded gaps of the trees. Abruptly, rain started drizzling on my dirty night robe, then proceeded to a fierce downpour. I panicked. I could still hear the Nazis shouting and the engines of their monstrous trucks driving in the distance.
Later, the rain had cleared. I crept into the sunlight, out of the looming shadow of the half-uprooted tree bark. One of the hedges had been blown away from the deadly howling winds last night. I squeezed through the gap and began my next walk. I trudged through the fallen logs and waded through pools of water. Suddenly, in the distance, I spotted a town! My weary legs, which were now blistering red, were ready to take a rest.
My worn-out legs slumped onto the road. I took rest on a bench I found next to me. When I woke up, I heard the grumble from a truck approaching me. This was the end. I trembled. The Nazi truck stopped all of a sudden. The soldier inside shouted in a foreign language, pointing at me. The soldier came out, armed with a bayonet. Shivers shot down my spine. My muscles tensed, ready to run. I would have run if I wasn’t paralysed from fear. This wasn’t looking good. What was he going to do?
He spotted my Star of David knitted to my robe (which basically gave everything away). I looked away, my teeth chattering. I then felt like something had pierced through me. My body was suddenly shot fiercely with pain. I felt like a helpless rag doll getting torn to pieces. My vision dimmed. I was done. What is the meaning of life if you are not let to live? This question still remains.
